11.13.09Similarities and DifferencesIn Social Studies, Kindergarten, first and second graders were exploring the similarities and differences between people across the world. We found it fairly easier to identify the differences between children than it was to see the similarities. We watched three videos, two of which were of a child talking about what life was like for them, one from Asia and one from Africa. The lives of these two children were both dramatically different then the lives of the children at MFS. However, they were both very happy and appreciative for the things they did have. The third video was a picture slideshow of children around the world. We saw countless differences between the appearances of the children. One thing we noticed quite quickly was that every child was smiling. Therefore, we came up with an extensive list of what most children would need or want in order to be happy. We all agreed that we have a lot to be happy about. We then broke into groups and started illustrating the words on our lists. Each student then made their own book from the illustrations they drew. We shared the books to the group and took them home to share with our families.
