10.23.09Learning Tai ChiWhen we talked with Laurie Traveline Neyer about teaching music at McGuffey, we discovered she had other great skills she volunteered to share with our students. Laurie practices Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art, and she generously offered to lead a group at McGuffey one morning a week. On Thursday morning students, teachers, and parents may participate in a short session. Practicers of Tai Chi say it focuses the mind solely on the movements of the form and helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity. The slow, repetitive work also increases internal circulation. McGuffey has always been creative about our Physical Education curriculum, incorporating sports at Miami, ice skating, bowling, and running programs. Tai Chi, a practice which combines moving the body with clearing the mind, seems like a perfect way to begin a school day. Special thanks to Laurie for leading our students in this fantastic opportunity! We’re enjoying music, too!
