09.04.09The Importance of MistakesIn the first weeks of first and second grade, students are getting back into the swing of things, reacquainting themselves with the rhythm of the school day. A fantastic hands-on activity to begin the year is to practice letters and beginning writing in shaving cream. Not only is it a fun and engaging activity, but it emphasizes the importance of trying new things and the inevitability of making mistakes. Janet Kretschmer, the first and second grade teacher points out to her students, “People who make mistakes are brave because they are willing to try something they may not do perfectly the first time.” So for much of the morning, students wrote and and erased and re-wrote and giggled and got delightfully messy.
