Holiday Music

Laurie Travelie Neyer joined us this year as our music teacher, and she has been doing some fantastic things with the kids.

During the holiday season, students performed at two different venues. In mid-December they performed with Laurie as part of the Second Fridays Program at the Oxford Community Arts Center. Then a week later they shared some songs with the residents at the Knolls of Oxford.

As part of the curriculum, Laurie brought in her recording equipment and worked to record all student groups. Primary students sang together, clustered around microphones, pausing for a quiet moment, then chiming in all together, as the song required. It was even more amazing to watch the upper unit kids, duets and small groups with headphones singing into the mikes. It looked just like what you see in videos! The experience helped everyone understand how today’s recorded music is put together.

Our digital media teacher helped duplicate the CD so that all students went home with a recording of their music, as well as a songbook of lyrics. Some of the students even designed covers for their CDs!
